Manipulating Electron Spin-orbit Coupling to Encode Data

Manipulating Electron Spin-orbit Coupling to Encode Data.
A new testing ground for quantum systems can literally turn particle interactions on and off.  Spintronics, or spin transport electronics, uses the spin of an electron to encode information.  This is in difference to how “classical electronics” encode data – via the positive or negative charge, effectively a 1 or 0.  Though a new field, spintronics capabilities are thought to be able to rival the speed of conventional electronics while using significantly less power.

“[T]he field is young and there are many questions researchers need to solve to improve their control of spin information.  One of the most complex questions plaguing the field is how the signal carried by particles with spin, known as spin current, decays over time.”  Our Qubit Report will keep tabs on the track the technology takes and report back.
