Argonne National Laboratory: Reducing Quantum Noise. Many current quantum information applications suffer from decoherence. Decoherence is the loss of quantum information due to environmental noise inherent to quantum hardware. Magnetism, temperature fluctuations in and around the device, and electrical currents contribute greatest to this noise.
U.S. Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory scientists “have developed a new technique that recovers this lost information by repeating the quantum process or experiment many times, with slightly different noise characteristics, and then analyzing the results…” The end product of the process is to create an estimate of the ‘noise-free observable’ and metadata on the effect of each noise variance. Effectively the new technique reduces the noise without additional expense in hardware.
