Japanese industry research and development teams have enabled a quantum key distribution (QKD) network over a distance of 7 kilometers with a speed over 10 Mbps. The network was constructed with designated fiber-optic lines transmitting photons encoded with data encryption keys. The teams developed the software to manage the crypto-keys, encryption algorithms, and coordinating routines to operate this first-ever, successful, and highly-secure network of the coming quantum era.
