Scientists Create Tiniest Semiconductor Laser – 3,000 Times Smaller Than a Millimeter | An international team of researchers led by researchers from ITMO University announced the development of the world’s most compact semiconductor laser that works in the visible range at room temperature. According to the authors of the research, the laser is a nanoparticle of only 310 nanometers in size (which is 3,000 times less than a millimeter) that can produce green coherent light at room temperature. Efficient arbitrary simultaneously entangling gates on a trapped-ion quantum computer | Efficiently entangling pairs of qubits is essential to fully harness the power of quantum computing. Here, we devise an exact protocol that simultaneously entangles arbitrary pairs of qubits on a trapped-ion quantum computer. The protocol requires classical computational resources polynomial in the system size, and very little overhead in the quantum control compared to a single-pair case. We demonstrate an exponential improvement in both classical and quantum resources over the current state of the art. We implement the protocol on a software-defined trapped-ion quantum computer, where we reconfigure the quantum computer architecture on demand. Centre for Quantum Technologies to welcome new Director | The Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) at the National University of Singapore is pleased to announce the appointment of José Ignacio Latorre as its new Director. José Ignacio will assume the position on 27 July 2020, taking over from the Centre’s founding Director Artur Ekert. CQT was established as Singapore’s first research centre of excellence in 2007 by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and Ministry of Education.
