Singapore-based Horizon Quantum Computing is simplifying and
speeding up software development for quantum computers. The company, founded in 2018, aims to allow
non-quantum computing developers to develop applications for quantum computer
hardware. In fulfilling this goal, the
company anticipates all software developers will be able to access quantum
computing.
On April 18, 2024, Horizon Quantum Computing announced a
first-of-its-kind effort: To establish a
modular quantum computing hardware and software testbed. The hardware integration will involve Triple
Alpha, the company’s software stack. The
testbed, hosted at their headquarters in Singapore, will allow supporting
multiple quantum computers. Integrating
the hardware and software in one locale allows Horizon full control over all
aspects of the system.
Further integration will be achieved through a modular
approach to system design. This design incorporates the Novera quantum
processor from Rigetti Computing and the OPX1000 from Quantum Machines, a
state-of-the-art processor-based controller. The modular structure facilitates
multiple hardware configurations and allows for future upgrades. Despite its
complexity, the company is targeting an early 2025 installation date.
Recent advancements in the field underscore a subtle urgency
to complete the system. “Recent progress
on quantum processors and error correction has underscored the rapid pace of
progress in the field. We are taking the
step of creating this testbed because we believe that tight integration between
hardware and software is the shortest path to truly useful quantum computing,”
states Dr Joe Fitzsimons, Founder & CEO.
Dr Fitzsimons brings to Horizon Quantum Computing 20 years of quantum
computing experience.

Rigetti Computing’s Dr Subodh Kulkarni CEO shared the same excitement, commenting, “Establishing high performing on-premise quantum computing capabilities is key for working towards useful quantum computing.”
Modularizing the system brings together Rigetti, Quantum Machines, and Horizon Quantum Computing, in pushing toward useful quantum computing. Set to deliver substantial benefits, the collaboration will promote the companies involved, developers, and the emerging quantum computing industry. The future awaits.
