China…’wants the world to know that it is a global power not just a titanic economy, having the geopolitical sway and military might to match, soft power of all sorts and a glorious future.’ Science is seen as an ennobling pursuit and a foundation for technological advance. China’s leadership wants the sort of science that will help project its power. Quantum computing, quantum communication, and many other cutting-edge science and technologies are being tested by this Communist country where freedom of thought has been untested.
