Key Takeaways:

Latvia is launching a national quantum communications infrastructure project in collaboration with leading entities.

The initiative aims to create a secure quantum key distribution network, bolstering data transmission security.

The project’s outcome will enhance cybersecurity capabilities and promote quantum technology adoption in various sectors by 2025.

Latvia is embarking on an ambitious project to establish a national quantum communications infrastructure system and network. The project involves collaboration between the Latvia State Radio and Television Centre, Tet, the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia, and the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Latvia.

The primary objective is to create a secure quantum key distribution (QKD) network among the partners, enhancing data security against quantum computer-based threats. QKD is a technology that enables the secure exchange of cryptographic keys using the principles of quantum mechanics, immune to decryption by quantum computers.

This initiative builds on a successful two-year quantum key distribution technology test, demonstrating its potential to improve data transmission security in Latvia’s communication infrastructure.

The Electronic Communications Office of Latvia will explore the integration of quantum key distribution networks into wireless communication systems, further strengthening data transmission security.

Tet will contribute by developing the quantum communications network and investigating applications in finance and healthcare. Specialists from these sectors will receive training in quantum communications technology.

By 2025, the project aims to provide secure quantum communication solutions for public institutions, businesses, and individuals, aligning with Latvia’s participation in the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) Initiative, fostering enhanced cybersecurity and the advancement of quantum technology.
