For the first time, researchers have demonstrated that crystals manufactured by lasers within a glass matrix maintain full ferroelectric functionality. 

What does this do for quantum computing?

Applications for the technology include use in current fiber optics used for data transmission – an extremely low loss link.  “Such low loss links ― that maximize performance ― are of particular importance for future quantum information transfer system that are projected to take over the current schemes for optical communication,” states Dierolf, Chair of Lehigh University’s Department of Physics. 

Simply, the transfer of quantum information from a quantum computer to classical systems requires very specialized equipment to properly transfer the data from quantum to classical.  This may lead to a bottleneck in throughput unless low loss and high-speed transfer is achieved.
