US group develops optical quantum network in ‘real-world’ setting | A team from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Stanford University and Purdue University have developed a fully functional quantum local area network, or QLAN, to enable real-time adjustments to information shared with geographically isolated systems. Self-annealing photon detector brings global quantum internet one step closer to feasibility | Tuesday, October 12, at 6 a.m. CDT, a quantum communications experiment was launched into low orbit around Earth from the International Space Station (ISS). Quantum sensors could revolutionize retinal diagnostic procedures | Researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark, led by Britta Westner and Sarang Dalal, have tested a potential replacement for these uncomfortable electrodes by using optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), publishing their results in NeuroImage. OPMs are quantum sensors that detect magnetic fields that are over one billion times smaller than the earth’s magnetic field. Cooling radio waves to their quantum ground state | Researchers at Delft University of Technology have found a new way to cool radio waves all the way down to their quantum ground state. To do so, they used circuits that employ an analog of the so-called laser cooling technique that is frequently used to cool atomic samples. The device used a recently developed technique the researchers call photon pressure coupling, which is predicted to be of use in detecting ultra-weak magnetic resonance (MRI) signals or for quantum-sensing applications that can help the search for dark matter.
