Weekly Roundup for the Week Ending March 21, 2020

If we could not find room for it, time to digest it, or a reason to run it during the past week, we have collected it here.  Not a recap for the week, but a cleanup of pieces we received and just could not get to.

Because Quantum is Coming. Qubit.

Perturbation-free studies of single molecules | Researchers of the University of Basel have developed a new method with which individual isolated molecules can be studied precisely—without destroying the molecule or even influencing its quantum state. This highly sensitive technique for probing molecules is widely applicable and paves the way for a range of new applications in the fields of quantum science, spectroscopy and chemistry, as the journal Science reports.  Source:  Perturbation-free studies of single molecules…

NICE: How New Supercomputer for N8 Universities Will Accelerate UK Research | Funding provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), has the potential to radically improve the UK’s capabilities in supercomputing.  Source:  NICE: How New Supercomputer for N8 Universities Will Accelerate UK Research…

IBM Building Europe’s First Quantum Computer | IBM (NYSE:IBM) will build Europe’s first quantum computer in Germany. The Armonk, New York-based tech giant will collaborate with the state-backed Fraunhofer Society to maintain this nine-foot-tall Q System One computer. The computer will be housed at a facility near Stuttgart and is expected to be operational in early 2021.  Source:  IBM Building Europe’s First Quantum Computer…

The Quantum Tech Race Puts the World’s Data at Risk | Can you imagine a world where MRI scanners would have the same size as smartphones? Or medical sensors “catching” disease with nothing but a simple blow? These examples may sound like a scenario borrowed from a sci-fi film to the average person, but most members from the quantum physics community suggest that these “fantastic” scenarios could be a reality in the very near futureSource:  The Quantum Tech Race Puts the World’s Data at Risk…

Cipherloc Corporation Introduces New QuantaNova(TM) Division and New QuantaNova.com Website | “The U.S. and our allies face immense hurdles in securing critical information, and challenges presented by the oncoming quantum computing era will only exacerbate the problem,” said Andrew Borene, CEO of Cipherloc and QuantaNova. “QuantaNova patented encryption technology equips these organizations to not only meet today’s challenges more efficiently but prepares them to manage whatever comes next.  Source:  Cipherloc Corporation Introduces New QuantaNova(TM) Division and New QuantaNova.com Website…

TensorFlow Quantum Joins Quantum Computing and Machine Learning | TensorFlow Quantum (TFQ) brings Google quantum computing framework Cirq and TensorFlow together to enable the creation of quantum machine learning (ML) models.  A quantum ML model is trained using quantum data, which is generated, or simulated, on quantum processors. This kind of data is found in a number of different research fields, including quantum matter, quantum chemistry, and others.  Source:  TensorFlow Quantum Joins Quantum Computing and Machine Learning…

Novel error-correction scheme developed for quantum computers |  Experimental quantum computers are plagued with errors. Here Dr Arne Grimsmo from the School of Physics and colleagues from RMIT and the University of Queensland offer a new way to reduce errors across different types of quantum hardware.  Source:  Novel error-correction scheme developed for quantum computers…

New crypto world record reached for prime factorizing | A team of computer scientists has improved the record for factorizing prime number products from 795 to 829 bit.  Source:  New crypto world record reached for prime factorizing…

Quantum’s Road To Commercialization | Over the past two decades, quantum computing has undergone a transformation from a largely scientific and theoretical field to an increasingly tangible product. The shift from prototype to commercialization has been a historical “make or break” moment for many emerging technologies. Innovations either pass through this inflection point unscathed or fall victim to a combination of overhyped promises and immature tech.  Source:  Quantum’s Road To Commercialization…
