Startup Funding August 2021
Quantum Brilliance received $9.7M in seed investment led by Main Sequence and founders of QxBranch, joined by CP Ventures, Investible, Jelix Ventures, MA Financial, R3I Ventures, and Ultratech Capital Partners. The startup uses synthetic diamonds to build quantum accelerators that do not require near absolute zero temperature or complex laser systems to operate with the goal of providing quantum accelerators the size of a lunchbox with over 50 qubits by 2025. Quantum Brilliance’s first product, a 5-qubit server rack-sized quantum accelerator, is now commercially available. It also offers a full stack of software and application tools. Based in Canberra, Australia, it was founded in 2019 as a spin-out from the Australian National University.

Quantum-Inspired Digital Annealer Streamlines Global Shipping Company Stowage
Fujitsu Limited and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), a major global shipping company, announced the introduction of Fujitsu’s quantum-inspired Digital Annealer technology to significantly streamline complex stowage planning for car carriers, leveraging the technology’s world-class combinatorial optimization capabilities. The Digital Annealer will play a role in automating aspects of the stowage planning process for NYK’s dedicated car carriers, an enormously complex task involving a vast number of possible stowage patterns depending on the number of vehicles loaded, models of vehicles, and the number of ports called along the shipping route. After successful initial tests, Fujitsu and NYK have launched a real-world operational trial of the technology on September 1st with an aim to commence full-scale operational use in April 2022.
The Battle for Post-Quantum Security Will be Won by Agility

Due to their special features, quantum computers have the disruptive potential to replace existing conventional computers in many applications. They could, for example, calculate simulations of complex molecules for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, perform complicated optimizations for the automotive and aviation industry, or create new findings from the analysis of complex financial data. At the same time, quantum computers also raise a lot of security concerns, and while today they don’t have real world applications, their capabilities are expected to grow significantly over the next 10 years. According to Michele Mosca, there is only a 14% chance that RSA2048 will be broken by 2026, but that grows to 50% by 2031. The security community has taken notice and is already preparing for quantum attacks.
Launched: Simulated Annealing Service Utilizing Vector Supercomputers
NEC Corporation announced the launch of the “NEC Vector Annealing Service,” a quantum-inspired simulated annealing service that uses a vector supercomputer, as well as the launch of educational services that enable participants to learn about quantum computers and how to use simulated annealing machines. NEC will start offering both services in November 2021.
NEC Orchestrating a Brighter World: Advances Quantum Strategic Industry Alliance for Revolution (Q-STAR)
The Founders’ Association of the Council for New Industry Creation through Quantum Technology was formed on May 31, 2021 to advance preparations for establishing an industry council to promote initiatives in quantum technologies. Today, the 24 companies of the association, at their general meeting, formally established the council under a new name, the Quantum Strategic Industry Alliance for Revolution: Q-STAR.
