Researchers in Canada and China have been working to enable quantum key distribution in optical fibre networks. Their work, coincidentally, was conducted independently yet arrived at nearly the same time — not to be silly. The challenge was the noise generated by the pre-existing networks and how to reduce the error-rates of transmitted photons while keeping the transmission rate “o.k.”. Written in layperson’s terms, this piece provides further details on the study and the concepts of quantum cryptography as it relates to classical cryptography. April 8, 2018.
