Maryland Teens Form Quantum Computing Club

Students from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States, have formed a quantum computing club. Club captain Ayush Varshney, a junior at the school, indicates big plans.

Aside from lectures, the club also has engaging in-school activities planned for its members. “Since these algorithms only work on quantum systems, we can’t really build and test them on normal computers,” Varshney says. “We make and run quantum circuits through IBM’s online quantum computer simulator instead.” [Silver Chips Online]

The club of teens will meet to discuss quantum computing theory, algorithms and programming, and the practical applications of quantum computers. From the need for quantum computing professionals in today’s under-staffed research centers, this group of young scientists could be the first of its kind. Opportunity is knocking and this team is taking action.
