Vacancies and Diamonds

Cornell University has used funding from the U.S. Office of Naval Research to study nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamonds to communicate quantum states via photons. Defects in the atomic structure of the diamonds were compensated for through the use of sound waves. Proof was in the pudding when lasers fired at the diamond caused emittance of photons, indicating the diamond structure was in resonance with the sound. By altering the sound waves, the orbital states of the diamond’s atoms could be altered; ergo, the path taken could be manipulated. April 28, 2018.

Diamonds have their place in the study of qubit manipulation.
