South Korea’s KT Using QRNG and QKD for Encrypted Cell Phone Communications

It would be interesting to delve into what KT is using for QKD. The piece is a little elusive into how QKD is being defined.  Noteworthy still as the work demonstrates advances and concern for mobile communications.  Because Quantum is Coming. Qubit

KT develops scrambler-free quantum smartphone communication technology

Key points…

+  South Korea’s top telecom company KT has developed a quantum communication technology that enables smartphones to communicate with each other using quantum encrypted voice data. The technique can enable private companies and customers to use quantum encryption technology without a physical scrambler device that is attached to a network.

Currently, KT’s new quantum encryption scrambler technology is capable of encrypting and decrypting voice data. “We are upgrading our technology to enable the quantum encryption of text messages,” KT’s PR manager Chun Se-won told Aju news. She said that the new technology is ready for commercialization.

+  KT said that a consortium including the telecom company and EYL, a domestic security startup, developed a communication technology using a quantum scrambler to relay voice data between two smartphones. Voice is encrypted to provide protection against real-time hacking attacks designed to eavesdrop on conversations.

+  A quantum communication system is no different from conventional scrambler systems. However, instead of using tables of passcodes, it uses Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) to generate numbers encoded in a quantum state that is virtually unhackable. When data is encoded, it is delivered to its destination by Quantum Key Distributor (QKD). The technology has emerged as an essential security solution for safeguarding critical information in the 5G era.aid that ordinary quantum encryption only uses QRNG for encryption while the newly-developed technique uses both QRNG and QKD. “The level of security of the quantum encryption technology has been upgraded,” the company said in a statement on March 10.
